Our approach

Caring for our country and for our community

It's a fact that must be envied by most industries - around 99 per cent of the energy Dampier Salt uses in the growing and processing of salt comes from the sun and wind.

We collect sea water, concentrate the salt through evaporation and harvest, wash and transport the salt to port. The concentration of sea water to salt is done through evaporation without producing any carbon dioxide CO2.

This is a story we are proud to tell in a world that recognises greenhouse gas emissions are contributing to climate change.

But this is only one part of the story. We have a long term commitment to sustainable development that not only includes environmental stewardship but also social wellbeing and economic prosperity.

As a member of the Rio Tinto Group, we have strong governance systems supporting our sustainable development programme. We are guided by the Group's policies and standards.

The best way to care for the country and the communities in which we operate is to be a successful business. Where decisions are based around the long term sustainability of the business - in an environmental, social and economic sense .

Two of our operations, Dampier and Lake MacLeod, have been running for over 40 years with the third, Port Hedland acquired in 2001. These operations have the potential to supply the community requirements for salt forever.

We are not perfect. We continue to learn and are building a culture at Dampier Salt where everyone can make a difference every day. We've recently introduced a programme, Don't waste your life or our business. This program is helping to change behaviours and in doing so reduce our impacts on the environment, both at work and in our home.

We invite you to share our journey.

Management systems

We operate our business under a number of management systems. These systems provide consistency in processes, direction and outcomes in the areas of health, safety, environment and quality. Effective implementation of the systems is measured by how well they are used by our employees and how well they reduce waste across our business.

Core to our philosophy in this area is ensuring we do the right job right the first time. To achieve this, an online tool called Our Business enables timely access to the right information for employees.

Over time, Dampier Salt is adopting the Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Management System standard developed by the Rio Tinto Group.

Each of Dampier Salt's sites, including our head office is certified to ISO9001 and ISO14001. The marketing arm of our business, Chlor-Alkali Unit Pty Ltd, is certified to ISO9001.

DNV is the external body responsible for conducting surveillance and triennial audits of Dampier Salt's management systems.
