Greenhouse gas emissions

Rio Tinto believes that emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) resulting from human activities are contributing to climate change. Dampier Salt is a low energy intensity business compared to the overall minerals industry. Our operations utilise sun and wind energy to evaporate water to produce our salt. Our approximate annual energy usage in the salt production process through sun and wind energy an estimated 75,200,000 MWhr. In comparing this to the approximated figure of 38,000 of electricity we purchase per year, our operations rely very little on fossil fuels.

Dampier Salt's greenhouse gas emissions and other emissions are reported in the Australian government's National Greenhouse Energy Register and National Pollutant Inventory
