Greenhouse gas emissions

Rio Tinto believes that emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) resulting from human activities are contributing to climate change. Avoiding human caused changes to the climate is an important international goal. In order to achieve this goal the world needs reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases.

Dampier Salt’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions is negligible compared with the overall  minerals industry and specifically the salt industry. Our operations utilise sun and wind energy to evaporate water to produce our salt. Our approximate annual energy usage in the salt production process through sun and wind energy is equivalent to 75,200,000 MWhr. In comparing this to the 18,700 MWhr of electricity we purchase per year, our operations rely very little on fossil fuels.

Dampier Salt’s greenhouse gas emissions and other emissions are reported in the Australian government’s National Greenhouse Energy Register and National Pollutant Inventory
