All in a Day’s Work

Two fishermen were washed off rocks at Camp Rock, approximately 3 kilometres north of Dampier Salt’s Cape Cuvier port operation.

Dampier Salt was called upon by a local station owner seeking assistance to rescue the two men.

Camp Rock is a favourite fishing spot for many people but very isolated and renowned for its treacherous waters and changing sea state. The area is not regularly serviced by Dampier Salt’s marine division, but fortuitously the tug Boolathana was nearby at Cape Cuvier and able to respond.

Dampier Salt’s Lake McLeod ambulance and Emergency Response Team were also mobilised to assist with casualties.

The two fishermen were found clinging to a life ring. They had been in the water for approximately 20 minutes and were stressed, lacerated from the reef and suffering from the cold.

The sea conditions at the time and the coldness of the water meant that the fishermen would have been in grave danger if not rescued so rapidly.

It is very fortunate that the Dampier Salt tug crew and Emergency Response Team were available and able to respond.

Our eight members of the tug crew and Emergency Response Team were presented with letters of commendation by Dampier Salt’s Managing Director, Denise Goldsworthy for outstanding achievement within the community.
